CATCHING THE MOON
Marcenia is a baseball fanatic and has convinced the boys in the neighborhood to let her play baseball with them. She proves that girls can do anything they set their mind too. This book is an engaging book you can use to discuss perseverance with you students, a timely topic for every classroom! A TALE OF TWO BEASTS
In A Tale of Two Beasts, the story is first told by the girl and one perspective is very clearly written. Then, suddenly the story switches to the “beast” and from his perspective the story is VERY different! A great reminder that each story has two sides and neither one is exclusively true, CLICK HERE to find my craft and writing response on TeachersPayTeachers.
CARLA’S SANDWICH
One of my favorite stories, Carla’s Sandwich is all about being different. The main character, Carla, is determined to be different and helps teach the other kids about how fun it can be to do things different from others, all through the simple act of bringing interesting sandwiches to school. ANANSI AND THE TALKING MELON
Anansi, a classic character who’s tactics have been retold by Eric Kimmel, is up to his usual tricks. Too lazy to grow his own melons, he uses a thorn to break a hole in one of Elephant’s garden. After eating the insides, Anansi realizes he is too big to get out! He’s able to trick Elephant and in the end escape the melon without notice!
