5 MARCH Read Alouds for First Grade
March… hope for the sun and expect the rain! March is the beginning of Spring and in the classroom our kids are anxious to play outside more. Here are five read alouds to keep their engagement high while in the classroom. But, who can say no to extra recess after the learning is done?? Even in the rain.
A SICK DAY FOR AMOS MCGEE
This lovely story is perfect for a rainy day afternoon activity. All kids can relate to having a sick day, and Amos McGee spends his sick day in bed. His friends show up at his house and stay with him while he is sick. CLICK HERE to grab this craft and writing response from my TeachersPayTeachers store.
HOW TO CATCH A LEPRECHAUN
The How to Catch a (Mermaid, Leprechaun, Snowman, etc.) series is LOVED by first graders! There are several clever traps in each book and even though the subject is never caught, the story is always enjoyed. How to Catch a Leprechaun is no different! The craft for this book companion includes accessories for your students to make their own trap to decorate! CLICK HERE to find my craft and writing response on TpT!
CAPS FOR SALE
A classic that kids love!! I have fond memories of the book Caps for Sale read to me by my primary teachers! In this story, the man with the hats for sale wanders the town attempting to sell his hats. When that fails, he rests under a tree and lo a behold monkeys steal his hats!! THE GARDEN | FROG AND TOAD TOGETHER
Firsties love a good, readable chapter book! Arnold Lobel does not dissapoint with his collection of short stories Frog and Toad Together. In the short story called The Garden, Frog gives Toad seeds to plant his own garden. Toad needs LOTS of patience as he waits for his seeds to grow! SYLVESTER AND THE MAGIC PEBBLE
A long and ENGAGING story, written by William Steig, will keep your firsties captivated as they wait to find out whether or not Sylvester can return back to his donkey self! He found a pebble, made a wish in haste, and turned into a silent stone, unable to wish himself back to normal. This story encourages students to think long and hard about what kind of wish they would make if they had a magic stone! CLICK HERE to find this craft and writing response in my TPT store.
